Earmake - Cosmic Hero

(Future 80s 2018)

I'm a sucker for synthwave that draws on sci-fi themes and imagery. Cosmic Hero is a concept EP that tells the story of a space station worker who goes on some kind of adventure. What kind is not exactly clear from the album description, but that's okay. It can be whatever you want it to be.

There are some quality tracks on Cosmic Hero. I really like "Save This Planet," which is suitably dramatic. And I love the guitars on "Station G," a track that features BlazerJacket (presumably on guitar). The best one, though, is "Quantum Gravity," a collaboration with Andromeda Dreams. It's lush and dreamy in the best possible way.

Bizarrely, Cosmic Hero starts with a clunker, a title track featuring a dull lead and a breakbeat that just feels out of place with the rest of the album. I realize Earmake is trying to tell a story here, but why not start with your best? Most people won't ever listen past the first track. Overall, though, this is a fun release.

Score: 8.0
