Mitch Murder - Instances

(Self 2018)

Mitch Murder is some kind of a genius. He releases faster than anyone by rights should, and the productions are impeccable. Everything he makes feels effortless, like he could finish an album a day no sweat. On the other hand, sometimes his music feels like a an idea he just had but didn't really put much thought into. So maybe it's time to slow down? Instances begs to differ.

The opening track, "Seeker," is dark and atmospheric, featuring Mitch Murder staples like syncopated kick drum breaks. "Huntress" is similar, if not quite as striking. Then Instances takes a turn from the '80s into the early '90s--another era ripe for exploration. "1993" is a perfect slice of rave with some quirky flourishes thrown in for good measure. And then there is "Fractals," which is...acid! Really good acid.

Instances is a surprising and strong retro EP that is both synthwave and not. If you like Mitch Murder, and do not insist on everything being '80s, you will have fun with this.

Score: 9.0
